FOR HER

Remind with Roses. Yes, the classic rose bouquet. But instead of the cut stems, make the scent-sation last with fragrance. For Him, Hermes Pamplemousse Rose plays with simple notes of grapefruit and rose. It has a spicy citrus beginning and ends elegantly with the depth of rose. Leave it up to Hermes to know how to make a man smell delicious. And for Her, Dolce & Gabbana Rose the One reveals a timeless rose blend petal by petal. A tribute to elegance and beauty. Or get a classic unisex Voleur de Roses Cologne by L'Artisan Parfumeur and Voleur de Roses Eau de Toilette to share the bouquet.

Indulge with Chocolate. The go-to gift of this holiday, chocolate can be especially endearing. Great gear is a motivator for exercise all year round. Some of my faves are the Nike Sport Watch for your runner guy and of course, Nike has an array of stuff to help him suit up for his game.

SKINCARE. The primary problem in men's skin care is neglect. Most guys just don't take the time (and it only takes a little) to care for their largest organ - their skin. Music and movies to be exact, plus video games, books and

magazines. Pork Rinds, literally deep fried pig skin - no carbs, lots of protein, and less fat then chips. His favorite team emblem on a t-shirt, sweatshirt, or jersey is always a pleaser (and then it can replace a ratty piece in his closet). My son loves the LA Clippers while my hubby prefers the Supersonics. And men are now catching on. The way you look has a lot to do with the way people look at you.

According to a recent survey by Allure and GQ, men spend only seven minutes less than women on their beauty regimen. Men use an average of 11 grooming products compared to an average of 16 beauty products for women.

The marketplace is meeting this swell with new products designed especially for men. A recent entry, STUF™ Men's Skin Defense, is brought to the market by Olympic icon Mark Spitz who enlisted derma e® Natural Bodycare to design the line of natural men's skincare. derma e® manufactures with wind energy and is an eco-friendly company.

Men's skincare needs are unique. Men's skin is oilier, thicker, more sensitive, and more acidic than women's skin. And in preparing and protecting the skin, natural men's skincare products are preferred for efficacy and for health. Ingredients like green tea, tea tree, aloe vera, vitamin A and vitamin E are top choices for soothing, anti-aging skincare.

There is opportunity to cater to men regarding their appearance - from grooming and skincare to fashion and style, men's attention to how they look is becoming more acceptable. The fact that men take care of their skin is universally accepted. Fashion and grooming will become a growing arena of interest for men. This market segment is developing and has legs... ooh, that reminds me of Joe Namath.

The Process. There are nine things of which great men must be mindful: to see when they look; to hear when they listen; to be gentle in appearance; to be respectful in manners; to be faithful in words; to be earnest in service; to inquire when in doubt; to think when in anger; to be just when they have an advantage. ~ Confucius

After reading Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions by Guy Kawasaki, I am excited to put forward the next big idea for my clients. But first, it is critical to discover the opportunity and define the goal. To do this, have a conversation with the world. Well, more clearly, listen and observe. You can gather clues from many sources whether it be the news, the web, or the neighborhood. Check out the landscape most relevant to your business ... and consider the frontier of alternatives.

One of the many sources I have found is <a href="http://www.tenbyten.org/ target="_blank"">ten by ten - a site the reflects the times in 100 words and pictures. Without human input (since the developers launched it), the site scans sources, analyzes text content, and presents the top 100 words and corresponding images. You can look back in time as far as 2004.
Give it a try and let me know your impressions.

As always, more to come.

Exuberance is beauty. — William Blake

Politics. We have too many politicians and we need legislators. In my humble opinion, most politicians are overly concerned with their personal agendas and thus cannot see clearly what is best for the country.

I am a humanist and a realist relative to government. Tough love is sometimes the right answer. I see benefits in both parties, though I don't rely on either. Am discouraged with the system that, at its foundation, is based on some really cool stuff.

It saddens me to hear people talk of America as a "Christian" country. It is a country under GOD - whichever way one chooses to embrace or pursue GOD, or not - and it happens to consist of many "Christians." The very heart of America began to beat with Freedom of Religion at it's core. Let us separate church (and temple and mosque and cathedral ...) and state (all government). Each of our selected rulers and officials must follow the calling in their own hearts to do what is best for the country to thrive in the freedoms that define America. GOD bless America (that one universal creator GOD regardless of the prophet who one may or may not wish to follow).

And the only "race" with which we should concern ourselves in this country is the Human Race--the rest is bias ... but don't get me started : )

This country is like a petri dish of the world.

To find wisdom, we would benefit from the awareness of a greater history than that which is presented. Perhaps with such an awareness, we would find compassion, common dreams, strengths to share.

American History needs to be complete, and presented objectively, if possible. The reflection needs to include all natives of America - the Navaho, O'odham, Havasupi, Apache... As I understand it, in example, "brown" Mexican murder and enslavement of "red" natives throughout the Southwest is as awful as that which the "whites" committed. The Spanish, French, Dutch, and English warred with one another and with the natives of the "new world." Throughout time and across Earth there has been struggle for - what - power, a sense of success, supremacy? ... even the native tribes killed, raped, looted, and took land from one another.

And then there were the atrocities among the "yellow" people who toiled to build the west. Plus the tortured women in the east ... "witches" burning at the stake. Not to mention women in general, fighting for equality with men - equality in rights. I have hardly turned the pages of history - imagine what else would be uncovered.

Looking across the world, it appears to be the unfortunate history of mankind. Remove the race-color card and see the power-control struggle that haunts us all. The issue appears to be deeper ... innate and based on fear. What wonderful things could we accomplish if we could embrace strengths across differences in a spirit of working together for mutual success. If we could move forward with the knowledge that every person has merit, and should only "serve" another by choice of vocation or by choice of compensation for mis-deeds (as prisoners might be required to clean up roadways, etc).

Let us find respect for one another. There is always a solution, a compromise perhaps, that can satisfy. The atrocities that haunt us need not divide us. Let them strengthen us as a community of people who will not allow fellow humans to suffer at the hand of ignorance and disrespect. Let us become bigger by learning from one another's strengths; sharing the rituals of one another's cultures - embracing some, allowing differences to exist side by side, letting go of that which no longer serves.

No matter what your station in life, it is wonderful to help and terrible to be taken advantage of -- I once was in NYC, a woman asked me for change. She didn't have one. A moment later she returned with a cig and a light, and a look of accomplishment. Before I lit it, I found my friends and returned to her with some change. Notice that which is comforting, and that which is not.

May you give thanks to and for yourself, each and every day.

May you always have an eye for heaven...

In response to a request for suggestions to determine cost cutting measures for teachers & school supplies, I submit the following.

First, I think the approach to learning might be more focused on re-useable resources. I have a stack of papers from the year, many of which will end up in the trash. It would help save paper, copying, pens, pencils, crayons, etc. to find another method for capturing the lessons - perhaps something akin to an etch-a-sketch or a Zen water painting board or an individual chalk board where the images can be created, then erased for the next assignment.

Second, art projects might be created in practice via the method above or something similar, then skills honed before creating a piece worth framing/keeping (thus limiting the body of works that come home). Children could be asked to contribute resources for artwork in order to inspire further creativity and to teach the lesson of re-using items and innovating... Expose them to the work of artists who create with found items ...

Third, perhaps every child might carry a lined spiral notebook or journal that would capture the "permanent" body of work for the year - thus parents would supply this and the writing instrument(s). This would reduce or eliminate a lot of the copying and paper expense.

And, exercise might be combined with reading/counting/reciting skills to stimulate activity on many levels. There are guides that could easily be employed such as fitness decks that can be versatile in a classroom and DVD's that could be broadcast in the gymnasium.

This takes further thought to flesh-out a full program applicable for each grade level ... perhaps the students could be asked for cost-cutting ideas they might find.

At-home study habits remain key to the effectiveness of any education program ... perhaps families could relate the many ways they teach or reinforce studies during time away from the classroom.

I just look at the piles of paper/glue/pen/crayon/glitter/etc that sits in boxes for each year of school ... and I wonder how to manage the "stuff" ...

It would help to see a list of expenses in order to glean where there might be other opportunities to reduce spending. Priorities remain Teachers, Support & Maintenance Staff, Facilities, and the Books/Guides/Tools for teaching.

Thank you for considering this far. And, for the opportunity to voice an idea.

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves." ~ Abraham Lincoln

Now, let's see what we CAN DO.

UNIFY US. Please help stop the us-them thinking. Having been born in the United States of America, I am an “American.” I have no other citizenship (and I do not wish for other citizenship). Too often people call themselves Asian-American, African-American, Mexican-American, Latin-American, Caucasian-American - when they are native to the USA by birth, or when they are citizens of this country by choice -and not citizens of another country or nation. These distinctions separate the people of the USA rather than uniting them, and this perpetuates us-them thinking. If you have dual citizenship, then by all means hyphenate the countries. Otherwise, celebrate the affinities as you wish while holding fast to our united affiliation with the USA.

MOTIVATE ALL. I am frustrated by inequitable programs that aid many who are unwilling to help themselves, while punishing many who have worked hard to overcome obstacles and create an opulent life for themselves and for their families. I believe that all are created equal though with different circumstances and environments and challenges and blessings; that all have the right to pursue happiness; that there are adequate resources to provide for every one to the extent they wish to succeed - without being at the expense of another. Provide opportunity for the needy to contribute with thought/word/deed that is compensated by aid ... Inspire and reward effort so all have hope that propels them to success.

FOSTER RESPONSIBILITY. Every one needs to take responsibility for their self, and reach out to help others. However, as history shows us – you cannot help one who is unwilling to help themself. This is a tough truth to accept, but it must be allowed. Don’t just give aid – show them their ability to earn it and sustain it – give hope. Of course there are those who are dependent, and must benefit from available resources.

INCREASE EDUCATION. Higher education can be dished out at lower levels. Rather than teach to the lowest common denominator, challenge all. Even an "F" in a subject is better than never having been exposed to the matter. Make education available to all who choose, not by scholarship only, but by creating options affordable at every level.

FORTIFY HEALTH. An insured patient is billed thousands of dollars for a hospital visit, while an uninsured patient is billed hundreds. Perhaps it would be best to reduce the paperwork and bureaucracy that piles cost into the equation. The current system needs fixed, not replaced by another broken system.

FLATTEN TAX. Prosperity and poverty exist … neither should be punished. The income tax rate should be the same for all - or at least increased at a more equitable rate. What incentive is there to succeed when there is a punishment that comes with it in the form of higher taxes and reduced benefits?

We need to look to one another for support in becoming the best each of us can so that we are a world of giants - not bullies or a force, but developed to our potential. Change is life. Let us move every American to build a nation that is an inspiration and an example of peaceful, prosperous, compassionate, joy filled human beings. Thank you for your attention and for your consideration.

EXPERIENCE
Sometimes less is more and more is less. Let's simply make it a perfect day.
OBSERVATION
The guy at the gas station had an embroidered work shirt -- the name on his left breast was "Happy" though his demeanor was otherwise. I wondered if he chose that as a word he wished to be associated with or whether it was actually his name?
ADVICE
When you are stressed, it helps a lot to find a peaceful moment. From there, remember to let the ones you love know that you have stuff that will take your attention and energy; and, once it is completed, you will be able to connect with them. They will most likely understand, and this might prevent hurt.
TILT (This I Learned Today)
According to a guy named Martin E P Seligman, PhD, whose website can be found at <a href="http://www.authentichappiness.org" Target= _"blank">http://www.authentichappiness.org, we now have evidence to suggest that counting your blessings, using your strengths regularly, and expressing gratitude can increase happiness and reduce depression. This is a pretty cool site with lots of interesting "tests" you can take to find out about your self and your level of joy.
AND A COUPLE OTHER THINGS
I am thankful for the inspiration, for the lessons I learn from another's challenges, for the camaraderie. The collective consciousness can evolve as we continue to strive for understanding, growth, tolerance, and respect gained through experience shared. And, then we can draw on the ever-evolving pool of knowledge... Grace is my goal right now. Grace in the eye of the storm; grace in the circle of love; grace in life.

This is from an email that was published ... it isn’t Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Tea Party, Green Party or Independent; it’s an idea for all parties.

THIS IS HOW YOU MIGHT FIX CONGRESS .... so that it works for "the people"

***************************************************
Congressional Reform Act

1. Term Limits.

12 years only: One of the possible options below...

A. Two Six-year Senate terms
B. Six Two-year House terms
C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms

2. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system; and Congress participates with the American people.

4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

Actually, they should immediately take a 10% Pay Cut to match the Private Sector. Government is NOT Retail. it is a Cost Center. They only get their money from US Tax Payers; many of whom have had a 10% pay cut for 3 years now (maybe a touch longer) with no pay raise and a spend freeze with Extra work to do due to layoffs. Shouldn’t they do the same since their money comes out our my/our pockets? The current Tax Plan would remain the same with less payout to Government Officials and it would be a BIG Increase on Making the Budget.

6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/11.

The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators not career politicians, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

If you agree with the above, pass it on. If not, provide your comments - we might come up with an improved solution! Both are given simultaneously: what you've sown, you'll harvest.

When Jesus relates to the "Kingdom of Heaven," as interpreted directly from Aramaic, he means the Kingdom inside and in the middle amongst us. Also "the next one" is inside and outside just as the whole Self. The arbitrary borders between spirit, body and soul fall apart.

The Aramaic has (like the Hebrew and Arabic) different levels of meaning. The words are organized and defined by a poetical system where different meanings of every word are possible. So, every line of the Lords Prayer could be translated to English in many different versions.

For your rumination ... here is a rather fair site that shows some of the many possibilities of the Lord's Prayer interpretation ...
http://www.spiritheart.org/chapel/lordpryr.htm

and, here is what I have found to be the most encompassing of the aramaic meanings (as expounded upon in parenthesis):

Oh Thou, from whom the breath of life comes, who fills all realms of sound, light and vibration. May Your light be experienced in my utmost holiest. Your Heavenly Domain approaches. Let Your will come true - in the universe (all that vibrates) just as on earth (that which is material and dense). Give us wisdom (understanding, assistance) for our daily need, detach the fetters of faults that bind us, (karma) like we let go the guilt of others. Let us not be lost in superficial things (materialism, common temptations), but let us be freed from that what keeps us off from our true purpose. From You comes the all-working will, the lively strength to act, the song that beautifies all and renews itself from age to age. Sealed in trust, faith and truth (I confirm with my entire being).

ahhhh, foiled again!

am "spending" an inordinate amount of time doing things that do not bring me joy ... and, I need to balance the activities better. since my passion meter is broken at the moment, I have no ambition. During that time approx. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:

the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:

A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:

A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes:

The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour:

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made.... Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent.

2. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."

3. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm, and says "A beer please and one for the road."

4. An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at either.

5. What do you call a fish with no eyes? ...A fsh.
...( I still laugh at that one)

6. A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt , and is named "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan." Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

7. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him a super-calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

...(you may groan at any time)

8. And finally, there was the person who sent twenty different puns to his friends, with the hope that at least ten of the puns would make them laugh. ... No pun in ten did.

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... If you have no plan, develop one. Begin with a search among the customizable blueprints that are available from current builders ... or, develop YOUR idea with the help of an architect.

Looking for a certain style? Want Tuscan, find a builder who specializes in the Tuscan look. Want Traditional? find a builder with that expertise ... There are a lot of "middle-of-the-road style" builders who capture the style that is customary in their market - they create lovely homes to meet the typical desires of the local client.

If you don't find the right rub with a builder of your style, don't dismay. Every builder can create every look. However, when one specializes in a style, or has experience with an approach, that is one less learning curve that has to be navigated.

Ultimately, it is key to find the builder with whom you "click" - the one in whom you feel confident and the one you can talk to about your needs, ideas, etc. It is a bit like dating, isn't it?

THINK ABOUT IT - RESOURCES FOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

In response to the budget cuts and requests for suggestions to determine cost cutting measures, I submit the following.

First, I think the approach to learning could be more focused on re-useable resources. I have a stack of papers from the year, many of which will end up in the trash. It would help save paper, copying, pens, pencils, crayons, etc. (along with expense) to find another method for capturing the lessons - perhaps something akin to an etch-a-sketch or a Zen water painting board or an individual chalk board where the images can be created, then erased for the next assignment.

Second, art projects could be created in practice via the method above or something similar, then skills honed before creating a piece worth framing/keeping (thus limiting the body of works that come home). Children could be asked to contribute resources for artwork in order to inspire further creativity and to teach the lesson of re-using items and innovating... Expose them to the work of artists who create with found items ...

Third, perhaps every child could carry a lined spiral notebook or journal that would capture the "permanent" body of work for the year - thus parents would supply this and the writing instrument(s). This would reduce or eliminate a lot of the copying and paper expense.

And, exercise could be combined with reading/counting/reciting skills to stimulate activity on many levels. There are guides that could easily be employed such as fitness decks (i.e www.familyfitnesspath.com) DVD's that could be broadcast in the gymnasium.

IN YOUR SPACE

Going green is the new "black." There are many ways to recycle, reduce, reuse, regenerate. Take a hint from nature and make like a flower drawing from the environment to give back... If we don't start considering these things, they won't happen. However, when we do consider innovation and outside-the-box ideas, we propel ourselves into a new arena of possibilities.

The best eco-innovations will work with your lifestyle. For inspiration, consider The Sustainable Dance Club. A Rotterdam architecture firm and a sustainability group built a dance floor that converts energy from people dancing into power for the lights and music.

Okay, so you might not be designing a night club ... but doesn't this make you want to get into the groove? And, we can all start simply by taking cans, bottles, glass, jars, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, paper, etc., and stuffing it into the appropriate bins at the recycle centers around town.

My soul taps me on the shoulder with a reminder that it matters not how you approach GOD, only that you do.

Choose your portal: resonance, atonement, a prophet, a son, a daughter, a guru, a witch, a queen, a king, a pauper, a church, a temple, a mosque, a cave, a park, a friend, a family, a chance, a moment, a lifetime ... and respect the portals of others.

If - when - you are confident in your self, you will wish to share your experience only in an effort to motivate and enlighten others to pursue their own path with renewed vigor ... never to convince them that your way is the only right way. While

I prefer to embrace a myth of life that captures the spirit deep within history to make it all ... survive ... every incarnation. Thus, none is for naught. And I weave the very fabric upon which I stand. Creating with threads through time and space, person and place, ... pairing up ideas like a food with wine ...

Pairing, like Ogdoad gods, where each pairing represents the female and male aspect of one of four concepts, water (Naunet and Nu), air (Amunet and Amun), darkness (Kauket and Kuk), and infinity (Hauhet and Huh). Or as in the legend of Horus, the concept of domination.

As expected during the ever-changing footprint of humankind, the Vatican was built upon the grounds previously devoted to the worship of Mithra (600 B.C.) and eventually devoted itself to a tapestry surrounding Jesus. So I wonder when my threads will strengthen around the concept of my CREATOR - S/He who made us in order to experience ItSelf among us and through us. For deep within my heart I long to be at one with and cradled in the arms of the eternal Parents. Safe. Warm. Loved. Unconditionally.

Perhaps, to become deserving of the reunion, we only need reach to one another with the very same unconditional love with which we were created ... Perhaps.

My style is "Mod"

Sparse but impactful, my home is my showcase. Color is used with care. Furnishings are sculptural, purposeful. Modern style always works in my home.

Modern style is a warmed-up version of contemporary, which keeps the clean lines, but pulls in more color and texture and uses softer materials.

It is interesting to interpret Modern while combining it with other style disciplines. In the past, I have decorated or designed in Modern Minimalism, Modern Spanish, Modern Mission, and, most recently past, Modern Mediterranean (pulling in elements influenced by Greece and Barcelona) and a brief dip into Modern Loft. Now I am working to pull together Modern SubUrban - this one is exciting. I am in the throws of creation. This is my passion.

What's left? you might ask. This is when you change the cosmetic elements. You repaint, change the carpet, put in new tile, change the draperies, and, perhaps move a wall to open up a space in the dwelling. Refashioning a home in a fresh way; updating it. Improving on what is.

Renovate. This is bigger. Improving by taking what is to the next level. Imagine removing the majority of what is and replacing it with the latest. Thus modernizing. Gutting gives the opportunity to make more dramatic change. This might be just a room or it might be an entire structure.

To refurbish, to repair, and to restore are important to both remodeling and to renovating.

Build. Holding the intention to improve the world through acts of kindness, faith, and opulence, I am inspired to open my self in order to create and step into win-win arenas.

Life is not about being "fair," it is about being in the moment and accepting the ebb and flow of experiences in this time-space continuum. Yes, this means respecting one another and acting in a manner that benefits all. This means having an open, objective perspective.

While I understand this intellectually, it is now time to employ it in my life. If you do not take care of yourself, both you and your child will suffer. There will not be enough of you to go around. This means getting adequate rest, nourishment, and time to ruminate about your own life so that you are “fed,” not “fed up.”

If you need help, ask for it. I had a hard time doing this because I did not wish to burden another, nor feel another obligation. However, in reaching for help, I found others who wished to feel needed. So, many needs were fulfilled; 1) I got time to my self, 2) my child built a relationship with a wonderful friend, 3) my friend felt needed and embraced by our family, and 4) the exchange of kindnesses gave all of us a boost in morale – it felt good!

I remind myself to remain aware of the child as a person. The child will see things with a perspective that is not the same as the parent’s, and the child deserves respect toward his or her point of view. Give choices, explain consequences, and realize that by using force or by spanking you send a message that power and control are the tools to use to manage differences. Avoid perpetuating this lesson.

As a person develops, there are behaviors that are age-appropriate. It is appropriate, though taxing, for my two year old to throw a tantrum. This same behavior is not appropriate for my 17 year old. Thus, I manage the events accordingly. I have learned that by my remaining calm, an emotional storm passes more quickly as opposed to intensifying when I get upset. Managing misbehavior with peace of mind is not always easy, and gets easier with practice.

From the poetry of Maya Angelou There is a lot of chat about Feng Shui - the design technique that focuses on energy flow. Whether you are decorating, designing, or divining, the key is to create spatial balance and harmony in your environment thus to allow for good fortune.

One thing everyone can do easily to "feng shui" their space is to close the toilet seat covers. This is an equal opportunity process - leveling the playing field for guys and gals. Every one needs to close the lid (and this means the seat will also be down!).

An open commode draws attention where it is not necessarily desired. In feng shui, it is considered a possible pathway for loss of resources. Close it, stop the energy flow ... and the room seems neater. Plus, one's attention can now be drawn to a pretty candle flickering on the shelf or to a serene picture on the wall. How fortunate is that?!

THINK ABOUT IT This is a "hit" list of influential books that can help your spirit soar. They are not about Christianity, Judaism, Islam, nor are they about church, temple, or mosque. God is a universal term that speaks to the unity within and among us all. Even the athiest has "God," though it is not defined as is that of religion.

What our founders have laid before us as a foundation is the fundamental truth of the "Laws of Nature." We have certain unalienable rights - including the right to interpret our individual relationship with "God" or life or nature or creator or ... in the way that resonates with us. And, that the ultimate source of all that we are lies in a "firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence."

The Declaration of Independence. It does not discriminate. It does not prosthletize. It only promises to uphold God-given rights to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."

Let us stop killing God. It is a word that has been enveloped by almost every religion, yet it is not owned by them. God, Creator, Source - however you define it, however you embrace it - needn't be a threat. It is only in the mis-perception of this mere word that one creates fear or disonance.

Let us learn from our founders to find God in our self - the voice that says "this way." And when we gather in agreement, let us make room for alternate points of view while embracing the universal God-given rights of every single being.

Let Peace reign. Peace be with our leaders and decision makers. Peace be upon us. Peace be among us. May we act in respect to God within each of us and in each other.

Etre bien dans sa peau. To be well in one's skin.

A sense of balance. A sensuality that ricochets among the senses. A confidence that enhances every moment, keeping one rooted here ... now.

It is without the pressing of should. It is choosing and enjoying that which will bring the most benefit from the resources at hand. It looks not forward nor does it look back. It is a breath ... followed.

I remember it now. And somehow I have forgotten. As I gaze with tired eyes - eyes that once sparked with the flame of optimism and enthusiasm - I see the flesh upon me and it is no longer strong. The familiar glisten of sun kissed skin now reflects liver spots and scars. Taught muscle that flexed and stretched carrying me through time and space now cramps and aches. I have become heavy. I feel pulled to the earth from my dreams.

It is not that I do not love this body, but that I do not know it. Foreign to me, my flesh seems to have morphed in but a moment while I was unaware.

I have aged. And, now what am I to do? The wisdom in my mind wishes to be carried again on athletic wings ... so I shall embrace thus to become nurtured ... and I shall resist thus to become strong.

For help, I return to the pages of The Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth. The key word is CELEBRATE. No "old geezer" stuff allowed. No "over the hill." It is all about "the Time of Your Life."

Getting older, aging, should be as exciting now as when we were 5 and looking to be 6! Only now, it seems to happen more quickly. And, the focus should be on living ...

To shape this event, I focused on my husband's greatest passion - Golf! The venue, why the Golf & Country Club, of course. Green buckets filled with golf balls and tied to helium golf-ball shaped ballons decorated the tables.

A cork board showed off highlights of his life and provided fodder for games. Yes, we played games. To introduce or provide social warm-up for those who would share tables, I gave each couple a slip of paper - they needed to match the question with the answer... Questions were from trivia posted on the cork board ... answers were posted there too. So, while couples mingled to get answers, they spent some time getting to know my husband's history a bit more vividly.

Of course we played the guessing game - how many golf balls and golf tees are in the jar? Winner takes it home. Plus the guest who traveled the greatest distance received a selection of travel size sundries. Everyone got party favors including a golf ball, candy, a fridge magnet with an inspirational saying tucked into paper boxes that served as placecards. The children received sports whistles and candy in the same.

Guests were allowed and even encouraged to bring gifts. C'mon. Why deny the celebrant the joy of unwrapping surprises like a plaque for his office, a celestial star named after him, a box of cigars, golf apparel, signature golf balls, a bottle of his favorite spirits, a selection of fine wine, gift certificates for dinner & books & golf stuff ... and a few hand made selections from the children!

It is not always easy to theme a party for another, however, with creativity and insight, you can find a special idea inspired by and for the birthday celebrant. Look forward! Enjoy the moment. Let the past be that which contributed to now.

Take every opportunity to INSPIRE TOLERANCE. In order to achieve this, it is essential to learn the core belief systems that thrive around the world. It should be made possible for all children to UNDERSTAND and COMPARE & CONTRAST the histories and the resulting philosophies of Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Plus, it is wise to explore the branches (i.e. Budhism-Jainism, Kabbalah-Orthodox-Masorti, Gnostics-Catholicism-Mormon, Sunni-Shi'a, etc.) that stem from or within these disciplines.

Additional exploration of more obscure belief systems, i.e. Zoroastrianism, would shed further LIGHT on the pursuit of resonance with G-D. With UNDERSTANDING, the world can grow to find UNITY by embracing similarities and to find PEACE by allowing conflicting ideas to CO-EXIST. Many paths, one destination... and many times the paths do cross.

The desire has been the same throughout time and space; the tone and the manner keep changing... consider one person's tale as revealed in The Gospel of Inclusion ...

My soul is running on fumes. Fed slightly by this or that, and then emptied before finding communion. While I know my connectivity with all that is, I am without understanding. It is lonely being here. Even though not alone, I move in the time space continuum among limits while I reach for the unlimited. My passions evade me right now. And, while I am happy to serve, I find I am emptied rather than filled by my daily to-dos.

So, I return my sights to the masters who have broken in the paths we now look to ... the very paths that lead to strife over "my god is better than yours" or "this way is better than that." Here at the crossroads, I wish to travel every path, and while I hover in order to glimpse them all, I realize I am on my own journey. And of this space I wish to share, while within it I find no interest other than my own.

Even though I know it is quite a splendid discovery, I cannot give of that which stirs me. In the restriction of my ability to give, I am unable to experience truth and light in all its splendor. So close, yet so far. And my heart longs to follow a unique drummer ... to share my tales and to discover that of another ... in a way that exponentially adds to the knowing.

This is an element of life. My god is your god and my way is as interesting as yours and together all points of view present the big picture.

peace. ohm. amen.

Okay to “Not Know”

Our children look to us as if we are infallible. And, for us, at times it is tough to live up to that … Also, for them, it is tough to follow the act. Thus, I encourage the truth-curiosity consequences game outlined here!

First, it is okay to say “I don’t know” when asked a question. Especially if you don’t know! That would be TRUTH. Now, explore various answers … CONSEQUENSES of not knowing and being CURIOUS.

Turn to your child and ask “what do you think?” Enjoy the answer (and it might take some patient probing). Not only will you inspire your child to think, to consider, to reason … you will enjoy the precious interaction!

Acknowledge your child’s perspective. Reiterate to confirm that you understand. Then give them a compliment or support – consider “good question” or, “interesting way to see it” or,“ you have a great sense of wit! (if laughter and silliness are part of the exchange)” etcetera.

And in the exchange, remember to communicate that curiosity is one of the joys of learning and growing. When appropriate, find reference material and learn something together (search books, ask others, surf the internet … among the possibilities).

Your child will learn that you are wise, even though you don’t know it all. This brings you respect for honesty and ingenuity. And it gives your child a sense of confidence and strength.

More on this to come … including the need to abolish “because I said so” from our vocabulary! And, send in your ideas, questions, experiences to share with others in an effort to expand the collective consciousness of LIVING IN PEACE.

In Lovingkindness,
Tamara

Last night...

I stayed awake through the wee hours to see "The Science of Sleep" after which I was inspired and roused by new ideas. While I enjoyed the film, there is so much I feel I missed; and so, I shall re-run it and be further amused, I am sure.

In sleep, we are free of typical time and space rules. In dreams we can experience an aspect of life that may otherwise elude us. Stirred by the film's depiction of intertwined encounters in states of sleep and waking, I am moved to revisit the memory of my dreams ... and, perhaps, journal them each morning. For then, I might find deeper understanding of the question, whatever it be.

Mais ouis. So, whatever role you play at whichever stage of your career, this is a history lesson for here and now.

Lesson 1: People Retire, Talent Thrives

With experienced employees reaching retirement, companies lose rich resources from their labor pool; yet, companies can still tap that talent. Many retirees wish to spend time with colleagues and enjoy the stimulation of work. Consider the flexibility (for you and your employees) of consulting. Retirees are the perfect pinch-hitters for projects that need extra person-power. This pool of experience is a perfect resource for varying demand.

If you’re entering retirement, yet wish to keep a toe in the workforce, offer your skills as a consultant. For employees still circling the water cooler, keeping in touch with exiting colleagues is a great way to have an experienced comrade to whom you can turn for knowledgeable advice.

Lesson 2: Build Bridges

Companies and individuals can benefit from mentorship bonds within the organization or the community. The mentor-mentee relationship promotes understanding and leads to mutual investment in success. If your company doesn’t have a mentorship program, reach out and set up your own network. Select a teacher if you are just beginning, or choose a protégé if you are more tenured.

Throughout your career journey, it is wise to learn from those who have blazed the path before, even as you make your own mark. Be respectful and mindful of your personal motivations. Open your mind to the possibility that, even though you may think you “know it all,” there are still some treasures to be found with more experienced colleagues.

Lesson 3: Stay In Touch

No matter what stage you’re at in your career, stay current with trends, innovations, and technology. Embracing new ways of doing things keeps talent fresh. Whether you’re just entering the workforce or if you’re ready to retire, never leave “learning” behind.

Companies can encourage employee education in many creative ways, one of the most efficient being on-site seminars. Employees can inspire educational programs by working with HR or launching “brown bag” lunch events. Here is an opportunity to enlist senior staff members to give presentations in order to share their expertise. At the same time, newbies can find presentation experience by researching and lecturing about a topic. Sharpen the pencil, the wit, and the mind while you feed the soul of an ever-wiser organization.

Lesson 4: While Talent is Tops, Character Commands

At any age, kindness, wisdom, honesty, loyalty, and perseverance combined with ability will be the meter of our life’s work. As the world’s children learn the pillars of character at home and at school, adults should further develop and encourage mindfulness of virtue – especially as ethics are challenged in an increasingly competitive world.

Companies can encourage truthfulness, respect, fairness, caring, responsibility, citizenship, and other virtues through business practices, policies, and by annually rewarding such behavior and the person who personifies character throughout the course of business. Employees can bring these qualities to every facet of their lives. Living well can bring prosperity to all of us.

Tamara Parisio is a freelance writer and entrepreneur. And in time, it will unfold over the pages. For now, I wish to shed light on distinctions. Semantics. Nuances that make all the difference.

You get only one chance to "get it right the first time." And all the planning in the world can only help. We spent many hours over the better part of three years defining our dream home, shaping the floor plan, designing each room. Then we traveled in search of the perfect place to plant our life, our family. A community in which to thrive.

We found the location. We had our plan. We found a builder. And now I am wiser.
Brilliant as a structure is in conception, it is doubtful whether it could be executed without the contractor's familiartiy with the methods of contractors and sub-contractors...

If you decide to build a home, you have many options. Many contractors position themselves as "custom" builders. When actually, it now seems to me, they are predominantly "customizers."

You might wonder why the knit-pick on the word. Let me explain.

Customized homes are pre-designed by an architect for the builder. One may choose a plan (perhaps from a handfull of options) and then select from a variety of finishes, and some upgrades. The builder might be willing/able to move a wall or change a door. Or perhaps add a deck. Still, the plan is available to any potential client. Often the designs have cute names to help distinguish them: Le Soleil, Grand Prix, Chambreau, etc. And, the quality can be at any level. A key benefit with this type of approach is that the contractor will be very familiar with the structure and with the scope of the project.

Custom homes are one of a kind. The owner works with an architect and perhaps an engineer to create the blueprint that will guide construction. Often, the design is created to fit a specific property. To the Nth degree, a custom home plan is one that a builder builds for the first time. Thus, a true custom builder usually focuses on only one or two projects in a year in order to give adequate attention to the many details and to allow for the "learning curve."

It is important to know that the person you hire to manage your dream will give the right attention to it. If the plan is intricate or includes elements that are a departure from the usual tone and manner in town, take the time to align with your contractor so the vision is shared from the start.

More to come as the novel is written ...

Ponderings ...

Face it, parenting is a tough job … and so is growing up. The greatest hurdles we have to overcome are our own misguided beliefs so that we do not pass them on to our children. For instance, I believed that people were trustworthy. Period. And, I have come to know that people “can be” trustworthy “if they so choose.” However, the choice is not common. So now that I have realized this perspective, I must equip my children to manage it as I hone those very tools.

Communication … is a key opportunity, and a potential hazard. My father would exclaim that he could not phantom why things were happening. And, he visited the choirpractor for spinal adjustments (never on Sunday). Thus, I learned a type of family-speak that was perceived to be understood among us, and, I learned to translate every sentence that I heard to ensure that I would get the right meaning. My children get quite frustrated by my constant questioning. I only assure them that I seek to understand.

Time and space… squeeze us because we fear taking a breath. Scurry the children out of bed and into clothing. Shovel cereal as we rush by the breakfast table and collect all our things for the day ahead. Climb into the adequately sized vehicle and strain through traffic as the tick tock clangs in our ears. We wonder why the youngest is crabby. How did our adolescent get so moody? And why is traffic at a dead stop in the middle of the morning?! Downsize - take one “appointment” off your calendar each week.

Breathe… cut yourself some slack. Remind yourself, and let your child know that you are doing the best possible with the knowledge you have. Express that as you continue to evolve, you will share your growing wisdom with them. And, be open to learning from the wise innocence of the young.

In loving kindness, Tamara

The journey of life ... crosses many paths. Be true to those you represent, and demand that those who represent you do so with integrity.

I notice how so many have their hands out, looking to profit from another's fortune. The historian who wishes to profit from the authors' captivating story, just because the tale weaves fact with fiction. The realtor who wants a cut of a sale that she never influenced, just because she represents another property. The agent who wishes to share the windfall from a gig he never negotiated, just because he is attempting to negotiate another gig. Both sides of the story have merit ... it is all in the promises, the contractual obligations, the ageements ...

One must always keep some independence ...

Pimping is mutually fruitful if the whore gets fed the business ... however, the each should be able to remain independent in that which s/he solicits on her/his own.

Somehow, still, it all works out ... through a thing called karma.

More About Feelings ~ written for The Peaceful Parent

One of the most pivotal issues in helping our children mature is to allow them to experience their feelings fully and safely. Providing unconditional positive regard for each child’s unique needs, values and wishes will help the child feel loved rather than shamed. That is, teach them to experience life events without being devastated or embittered by them.

An example: My son is afraid of going to school. It is important that I let him know that it is okay to have the fear, and to support him while he is afraid. Do not dismiss or ridicule another’s feeling as this will result in shame. Uphold it so that it can be processed. As I say to my son when he starts to cling when I get ready to depart his preschool, “It is okay to be afraid, but don’t let it stop you from having fun and learning new things. I will see you at lunchtime.” Support for his feelings will help him trust his ability to survive fear.

The same concept is important when celebrating. When my daughter talked excitedly about a possible modeling job, I erroneously “tempered” her enthusiasm with a reminder of what she might encounter. In my attempt to protect her from hurt, I hurt her, taking the air out of her balloon of joy. Had I the opportunity to relive this moment, I would have encouraged her with praise, hugs and a plan to help her get ready. Then, after the event, I would have responded appropriately to her feelings about her experience. As we have reflected on the impact of this interaction, we have both learned.

Finally, I shall reflect on my step-daughter’s decision to quit college upon finding that she was pregnant. Though all of us parents and all of her siblings had an opinion about how to manage her situation, it was important that we supported her choices. We gave her information and shared the possible consequences of each. Then we could only help her deal with her decisions and the resulting events. Her life is blossoming splendidly in her hands!

Live mindfully in the moment. We are not fixing but rather we are guiding and then supporting our children in their choices. We are allowing their experience of their feelings in a way that lets them learn to be confident, self assured, and emotionally mature. That is, to experience life events without being devastated or embittered by them.

In loving kindness, Tamara

Feelings ... What are you feeling … and how are you behaving? Emotional maturity is a key life lesson to give our children, and to hone for our selves. It has taken me many years to understand the nuances I still seek to master.

One key is to distinguish feelings and behavior. Behavior is learned and can be reshaped. For instance, anger is a feeling. Some choose to holler or to rant or to become destructive when they feel anger. A more peaceful solution could be to talk about it or to journal it, to find a response that is productive.

With my daughter, I endlessly explained how I was feeling and often had to adjust my behavior. For instance, one evening after an unusually stressful work day, I was short with her about dinner. Seeing the hurt in her eyes “brought me to earth.” After apologizing to her, I explained that I was frustrated and that I was not handling it well. I assured her it was not about her and that it was not right for me to be short with her. I told her that I felt overwhelmed with some of the things I had to do. Then I took a deep breath and realized other things I could do in response to these feelings.

Later, when she was snapping at me, I asked her what she was feeling. She apologized for being rude, and then explained how she was feeling stressed. The aha light blinked on, and she proceeded to tell me other ways she could behave in response to her feelings.

Now, both of us are more equipped to manage the feelings of being overwhelmed and of being frustrated. (Lists, prioritizing, asking for help, and talking through fears help put things into perspective).

With my toddler, I have found a new tool – it is a flip chart of faces illustrating feelings in a book called MOOD SWINGS by Jim Borgman. This and a variety of other developmental products are available from Creative Therapy Associates, Inc., at http://www.ctherapy.com/. We use the flip chart to help him find words to explain what he is feeling, and then we talk about many ways to express it. I aim to teach him that feelings are an indicator, and that we have a choice about how we respond based on this information.

Your comments and feedback about feelings and behavior are welcome. Being a role model is not always easy… but what a wonderful way to grow.

In loving kindness, Tamara

Design is a reflection. It can be intricately woven, or simply put. What ever you wish to express, find an angle to fully explore. Then, carry it out to your satisfaction.

Reflections today ... it rains again. The scent reminds me of summertime in Minnesota. Damp and warm, shrouded by overcast skies, this spring day is still ~ waiting to breathe. The sadness of winter hangs in the air .

The weather, such a mundane topic. Affects of the weather, deep.

I close my eyes and remember the sun, soft marine breezes that rustle the leaves. I smell the heat of summer ... and I know that the winds of change will come. I shall remain present for the scene that unfolds here now.

Rivalry

It is interesting to embrace the notion that conflict happens in an effort to achieve agreement. That accepted, we need to realize the possibilities: my way, your way, or some other way. This is where most of us stop because we only want “my way” while the opponent wants “your way.” Thus, we fail to begin the approach with finding possibilities: other ways that may become “the way.”

While our daughters were progressing through their teens, it was a rite at the 16th birthday to receive a car. The first was a 4-door white sedan that fit the squeaky budget at that time, and left our oldest dancing in glee while the others looked on in excitement for their own time to come. The next, a couple years later – following a strong professional growth period for both parents, was a 2-door sporty red car that resulted in a dance of glee while the oldest cried about how she was less loved (and the youngest looked on in excitement for her time to come). The third car was selected with the same care, increased resources and a great opportunity. It was a 4-door silver sporty model that left two crying while the third one danced.

This resulted in returning to the “birth order” chat. Each sibling stratum holds its blessings and curses. The first born has to forge the way while parents are overly cautious. Things get easier with the second born, and there is a playmate on site! Every additional sibling gets enveloped by the others. And, with each child, the parents become wiser in their ways. If you all compare notes, you will see that we made different mistakes with each of you! And, we were better equipped with resources in varying measures as each of you reached a need.

So we talked about the details of every “sweet 16” and asked, “what did we do right?” then, “what did we miss?” and finally, “what would you do with the same resources?”

Wow, realizing the geography when each of them earned their wheels, all agreed that they would do what we had done. And, they realized how special each of them were to us, and to one another.

The first born opens our eyes. And the baby shows us the last string of growing up stages … until grandchildren. Every child in between brings wisdom, challenge, and a new perspective to the family. Equal and fair is getting constant support, encouragement, and guidance from your loving family.

In Lovingkindness,
Tamara
